The History Department of Shyampur college of west Bengal aims to promote the study and appreciation of the rich and diverse history of India and the world, with a special focus on the historical and cultural heritage of west Bengal. The department strives to provide quality education and research opportunities to the students and faculty, and to engage with the local community through various outreach activities.

The Department of History has a vision of offering a rich and diverse curriculum that covers the history of India and its interactions with the rest of the world. The department also wants to teach this curriculum in both Hindustani and English languages, so that more students can access and appreciate it. The department believes that studying history can help students develop a spirit of inquiry, critical thinking and social responsibility, and also prepare them for their future careers in various fields. To achieve this vision, the department follows four steps: first, it creates a syllabus that reflects the richness of India’s past and its historical links with the world; second, it teaches this syllabus to students in an engaging and effective way; third, it encourages students to actively participate in field trips and seminars, where they can learn from experts and experience the past first-hand; and fourth, it supervises students in writing original and rigorous dissertations, so that the department can contribute to the advancement of historical research. The department also has some specific goals that it wants to accomplish in the next few years, such as: increasing the enrolment and retention of students in the history courses by 10%; publishing at least five research papers in reputed journals and presenting at least ten papers in national and international conferences; organizing at least one field trip and one seminar per semester for the students and faculty; collaborating with at least two other departments or institutions for interdisciplinary research and teaching projects; and developing at least one online course or module on the history of west Bengal for the benefit of the wider public.
