The college was founded way back in 1964 in Amrabati village of Howrah district some 75 Kms. away from Kolkata in the close vicinity of Gadiarah, a well known tourist spot of southern West Bengal. Late Murari Mohan Manna – the visionary Pathfinder – being identified with the common man’s right to enlightenment and appreciating the necessity of spreading the lights of education to the thousands of underprivileged families for their empowerment, founded the college with whatever resources he was endowed with. The genesis of the college was modest, as it offered general stream courses in humanities, science and commerce, but consolidating on the foundation of vision for growth, the curriculum bouquet soon started enriching itself to impart honours curriculum in many subjects. The college being the only one of its kind within the radial periphery of 25 Kms., has delivered the need for higher education to a vast section of the underprivileged society for the last 56 years through the unquestioned commitment of the teachers and the members of the non-teaching staff.
Higher Education across the globe is witnessing widespread changes. The core element of such changes is to make higher education more and more befitting to the different dimensions of transformation taking place in the nature and functioning of economy in general and business in particular. In face of such changes that has come during the last five to ten years and with many more changes to come in the coming years perhaps at an increasingly greater pace, institutes of higher education are to change – a change that empowers both the educators as well as the learners so that higher education institutes become relevant to all its stakeholders which essentially lies in its ability to link people with the new age, helping them to identify with the emerging realities, motivating them to accept the change and enable them to be self-learners. Since 2009 the development of the college is being guided by a Quality Awareness Cell [within the jurisdiction of the Calcutta University Statue]
The Quality Awareness cell has been set up by the Principal in consultation with the teachers during the Teachers’ Council Meeting held on January 20, 2009. The decision to set up such a cell got further approved by the Governing Body of the college during its meeting held on March 20, 2009. Our college has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for a period of five years at ‘B’ Grade valid from 08.01.2011.The College is preparing itself for the assessment and accreditation of NAAC in the 2nd Cycle.
The Quality Cell has been set up with the objective of preparing the ground for setting up of the IQAC during the post assessment stage. The IQAC has already been set up in the meeting of the Teachers' Council dated 10.05.2011. It is for this reason we feel we need to draw an Action Plan for the future realization of which, however, is dependent on fulfillment of several external constraints. For years, the interactions between educators and learners were less transparent as practice of teaching in an academia remained a closed-room affair while transparency remained less pronounced.
The need of the hour is planned and systematic delivery of lessons with large emphasis on applied content on one hand and transparency on the other. Teachers in each faculty will be required to build modular curriculum which renders a fairly high degree of transparency about the course contents and goes a long way in shaping a profound conception and understanding about the subject. The rigorous use of computer-web technology is expected to create lasting impressions on the learners’ mind and is therefore more effective.
Yet another area, which requires reorientation of thinking, is exploring greater interaction among teachers [intra and inter department from within and outside the institutions] often along inter disciplinary lines so that seminars and exchange lectures are arranged which promotes the healthy practices of academic interactions.
With the winds privatization gaining momentum, state is no longer the principal employer of the educated youth in the country. The hard reality is that majority of employment opportunities now are in the private sector and this sector employs only those who possess skills and competencies required by it which are continually changing to keep pace with its global competitors. Looking from this perspective HEIs these days are expected to provide support to the students beyond core learning with an obvious thrust towards career building and the curriculum must be tailor-made to the requirements of the private sector so that HEIs can function as effective supply chain to the corporate sector.
This requires the HEIs to include value added courses like Communicative English, Basic Computer Training etc. the college envisages performing the function of enrichment of students by making them learn.
The college is affiliated to the University of Calcutta and included under Section 2(f) and 12 B of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 but till 6th July, 2007 it was managed by a Managing Committee constituted by the Shyampur Siddheswari Mahavidyalaya Society. On 7th July, 2007 the Governing Body as per clause 93(1) of the Calcutta University First Statute, 1979 was constituted and started to function.
The college started its journey on the date of establishment, i.e., on 17th August, 1964 with only a few subjects of B.A. (General) curriculum of the University of Calcutta. Thereafter, the other subjects of the B.A., B.Sc. & B.Com. (Honours & General) Curriculum were introduced one by one year after year with the affiliation of the University of Calcutta. At present, the college has 21 teaching departments of which 14 departments impart Honours curriculum.
